WHY ARE "CONVERTIBLE" DRESSES SO UGLY?

There’s been much hype in the press recently about “convertible” or “multiple” dresses. How, for instance, you get so much bang for your buck/pound/euro. Investment dressing yada yada yada. The gold standard seems to be the Butter by Nadia Signature Wrap Dress (below) with all its multifarious combinations. But isn't it ugly? What’s your view? Do you have a “multiple” and does it work for you?

Here are some “multiples” and combinations:
KEY:
1. Butter by Nadia Signature Wrap Dress
2. Different Butter by Nadia combinations
3 In other colours
4-7 Other designs and combinations (Oops! And in
blue!)
IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY GOT A “MULTIPLE", ARE YOU CONSIDERING BUYING ONE? DO LET ME KNOW!

Happy Ruby Tuesday to everyone in Australia, New Zealand and the Far East where it’s already Tuesday!
And do visit other Ruby Tuesday and Rednesday posts! (Links at Work of the Poet and Sue loves Cherries.)
Enjoy!
XOXO LOLA:)
PS See you again for Alphabe-Thursday!

I remember something like this in the 80s (not known for its great fashion). It didn't catch on then, I doubt it will now. I think its to faddish.
Tip to those considering one: make your husband buy you many dresses daaaaaahlings

It's amazing to see all the things one dress can do. Somehow, if I owned it, I'm sure that I would wear it the same time every time. ;)

By the way, our neighbor has exactly the same name as you! It makes me smile. Thanks for visiting me today.

If one is 5'10" and 120 lbs it probably looks alright - but alright isn't good enough.

I'd never seen a convertible dress so I don't own one..Wouldn't that be great for those stars at award shows that change clothes at every commercial? I wouldn't be able to decide which way to wear it..I guess you'd have to go braless which leaves me out anyway!

Love this post - packed with interesting information! And no, won't be buying one of these now!

I've seen these before but have never worn one. Now, I am thinking that if you are TALL, THIN and look like Julia Roberts, it would look fantastic any way it was worn.:))
I have a great giveaway...come by.

Like the commenter above, I'd only wear it one way so what would be the point? lol

Agree with everyone else, need to be very tall, very thin & very beautiful to carry this off! :(

If only it looked like that on the "average" person! But of course it doesn't! 8-)

They look good, but I don't think I will wear the same dress over and over again...

Looks ridiculous on any figure - like an odd bit of curtain material!

I've never tried it. I have to admit I'm quite amused with what you can do with it but I don't think I would want to wear them.

Happy Ruby Tuesday!

A few of those ways are cute, but you're right, most aren't. If I owned a dress like that, I'd most likely just wear it the same way out of laziness. Now if they could create instantly-dyable dresses, then that'd be something!

In addition to being tall and lean, one also has to be young.
I will not even think how my arms and goose throat would look in one of these outfits.
Someday the world of modes must realize that woman over 60 also have money to spend on clothes!

bichonpawz said...

I must agree with the previous comment...if one had a body of a model...they might look good. Sadly...most of us don't! I would not wear any of those things...

Lean (not really), young (no longer) so this is not for me either.

i think that no one can make it look the same as the pics and even then, buy another dress already - don't you want variety in your wardrobe??? :D

Hi Nora and Lola,

Great post and no I have never had one of these dresses.
Love the advice Heavenly housewife gives, make husband buy many dresses.
That sounds good to me!

Happy week, dear friends.

I think, it's a fashion revival from long time ago. It looks nice but I don't think I'd wear it. It's too complicated to wear. My RT is here.

They look so nice on a slim figure. But for me, I dare not even try them on.

Yesterday at my class, a girl asked how heavy our net ball captain is. I said, i don't know, I can't find it anywhere.

A boy, age 7, said, you never ever ask a girl her weight. She gets very angry.

I LOL, because I never told him this, age yes,.

i am a fashion nightmare! i wear tshirts and cargo shorts year round. the only time i put on pants is when i have to shovel snow!
however, i do love fashion in all its classy-ness and crazy-ness! i like the wrap dress... even though i would not ever put one on. i think its a good dress for people on a tight budget who want a bunch of great looks. it seems like it would be good to take on a vacation or a cruise too. you could style it to suit your mood or your destination.
this was a fun post lola. i enjoyed it...

Ruby Tuesday again, and here we are, more fashion. I guess if I saw someone walking around town in one of these convertable wrap dresses, I'd take a gander, after all, after reading this information and seewing this post, i would know what it was called and probably impress whoever I was with with my knowledge.
After that, I love the Leonard Cohen, and that alone made my visit here well worth the while. Not all that many Cohen fans out there, at least not many that play his music on their blog.
Thanks for stopping by my place, by the way. I appreciate that too.

Peace.

I'm not a fan of these dresses - can I say a work colleague had to wear one as a bridesmaid dress - the bride chose NAVY for her girls....think she is a mean bride!

they look good to me.. maybe as long as i dont have to wear them :)

Oh, I don't like those dresses!

In the top picture the first two are alright, just the last one is ...

There are definitely some not so nice ones, and a few nice ones here.

My mom has one convertible dress, and it looks great :)

These would be great for the right person. They are not designed for seniors. Not many of the clothing styles are this day.

A dress should be made to fit, do one thing. This dress has a multiple personality disorder, therefore it does not know what it wants to be. How can a dress with such a complex possible hang right on anyone? Even tall and lanky girls? ;-) I prefer my wardrobe to be filled with well-adjusted pieces that do not require therapy to know how to hang!!

EG CameraGirl said...

Only a few people can wear them and look good. ;)

I would like it if I was skinny and had someone to wrap it on me each time I wore it!

Fundamental principle: that which is intended to suit all is good for nothing. Yes, Lily, multiple personality disorder is a good name for this kind of disaster. Seems more people loath this dress than like it. No wonder; most people smart.

I didn't find it so ugly, probably because I live in India, and we don't usually get to see such dresses. In fact, it would be a super-selling item if something like this gets into the markets here :) How much does it cost anyway?

Kathleen said...

I actually own two of these dresses. I love them! I'm not tall (5'1") and I'm not skinny (~160 lbs.) but the dresses fit me perfectly and they look great. I get a lot of compliments when I wear my dresses. You just have to wrap the straps around your waist so that it gives your waist definition. I think this type of dress is the PERFECT LBD. I'm really happy I bought these dresses.
