PUBLIC ART?

The Elephant Parade 2010, Trafalgar Square, London

Do life-size statues like these have a place in a busy, congested city like London?
Or are they simply the despair of commuters but the delight of tourists? What’s your view?

A Happy Ruby Tuesday to everyone in Australia, New Zealand and the Far East where it’s already Tuesday!!
And do visit other Ruby Tuesday posts! (Links at
Work of the Poet.)
Enjoy!
XOXO LOLA:)

Trafalgar Square's already crowded with tourists. Why not put them somewhere else - like in a park?

They're huge - look how tiny that man is in the background!lol

I love this - and once I would have even known about it before it happened. I am so out of the London loop.

Fabulous, and they absolutely have a place - they humanize (err, elephantize?) the anonymous city and add both color and good will. Here in Tel Aviv we had penguins of all things a few years ago, and Jerusalem had lions.

I've entered a major international photo competition (details are on my blog) and would be most grateful if you'd click through and rate my portfolio (just click on the stars at the bottom (preferably the 5th star - "fantastic" - LOL), easy peasy, no registration or personal details needed). Thanks so much!

I am wondering why elephants in London! But I guess it is a wonderful distraction in a place where busy-ness is the key to being. They do look fascinating! Each one unique!

I think these are great! But if I"m not mistaken, these elephants are currently all over London, not just Trafalgar Square and it's actually a charity thing to raise money/donations, so I do think that puts a diffferent spin on things.

I think in the name of charity you can pretty much get away with anything and I do like that there are more creative ways of raising money these days!

I think it might be annoying as a pedestrian if I had to walk up and down those stairs each day on my way to and from work.

Hi Lola and Nora,

I love Elephants and these are fun and colourful and if it is raising money for Charity, even better.

I hope that you are having a great week.

Well... Just put them in a suitable area so that it doesn't disturb clumsy people like me XD

And if they are going to put it in the open, better not make too many. Too much of everything drives me nuts @.@

Just make something good for the environment =)

Just from a picture point of view. these elephants are spectacular. If I was living in London and they would inhibit proper flow of pedestrians then I'm not to sure. I wonder how long they will be there...Thanks for sharing.

I can't comment specifically on the elephants ... but one of the things I always love about London is you never know what's around the corner. The last time I was there it was people on the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square hitting ping pong balls into the crown. I hope London never loses its spontaneity.
