CLASSIC DISHES NAMED AFTER PEOPLE ...

Dear readers, this week a bit of an eye- and mouthwatering treat as we examine some favourite dishes in ‘P’ is for THE *P*AVLOVA & OTHER CLASSIC DISHES NAMED AFTER PEOPLE...

1. The Pavlova (above) – named after the ballerina Anna Pavlova
2. Tarte Tatin (below) - named after two 19TH century French sisters:
3. Caesar salad – created by Caesar Cardini, an Italian immigrant who owned restaurants in the USA & Mexico:
4. Charlotte Russe – “Russe” may refer to the chef’s (Marie-Antoine Carême) employer Tsar Alexander while "Charlotte” to George 1V‘s daughter:
5. Pêche Melba – invented by Escoffier at the Savoy Hotel in the 1890’s for Australian opera singer Nelly Melba:
6. Frangipane tart – named after a 16th century member of the Italian Frangipani family:
7. Beef Wellington – named after the, er, Duke of Wellington:
8. Sachertorte – created by confectioner Franz Sacher for Austrian Prinz Wenzel von Metternich in 1832:
9 Beef Stroganoff – named after the, umm, Russian Stroganoff family:
10. Sandwich – named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich who, too busy to stop for a meal, allegedly ordered meat to be brought to him held between two slices of bread:

We have a breakfast casserole named after my sis-in-law. It was scrumptious! Mine never turned out as good as hers!

Those look soooo good, Nora. I think I have eaten about half of those dishes. The Tarte Tatin would be my favorite. I don't think I have tried that one.

Yes, I have a Jim's Split Pea Soup with Wieners and Sautéed Celery and Caramelized Onion. It is soooo yummy, I make it with packaged dried spit peas on cold days. The hot dogs are sliced like a carrot.

This was interesting! And yes, I have a family treat named after me..."Susie's jello," with strawberries and pineapple and bananas and sour cream. It's a winner and was my favorite as a child...hence the name in our family lore.

Great food with great names that I didn't know how they got them!

Well, I like Cesar Salad - my favorite way to consume anchovies...the peach melba looks divine. Lots of calories inside all these self-named treats...the better to remember the creator by! In our home, dishes are not formally named nor trademarked and might be referred to as Chicken Ralph or such. Providing that it is delicious that is...
