WHICH OLD FAMILY RECIPES FILL YOU WITH NOSTALGIA?

There are, of course, some dishes that are probably best left dead! Squeamishness has put paid to a number of ancient foods, for example the Roman garum and liquamen - pastes made from rotting fish guts and heads. Fortunately you can now buy a jar of readymade anchovy sauce if you haven’t any rotting fish guts and heads handy!

And have you ever made bheja, curried sheep's brains, a Pakistani delicacy? No, nor have I! The smell of boiling brains is one that’s truly repulsive and the end result’s not all that great. Liver pâté has the same consistency and tastes a lot better! There are, too, some dishes you know you'll never want to eat again, and others, like the oft-repeated example of Proust's madeleine, which take you back into another time and place. Which dishes have entered your family's mythology, for either the right or the wrong reasons? (Below, Thai RED curry for Ruby Tuesday!) Happy Ruby Tuesday and Rednesday!
And do visit other Ruby Tuesday/Rednesday posts! (Links at Work of the Poet & Sue loves Cherries)
Enjoy!
XOXO LOLA:)
PS Have a good week and see you again for Alphabe-Thursday!

I think it would have to be a sausage pilaf that my mother makes. It's the favorite of every child and grandchild and everyone has a copy of the recipe.

I have an entire filebox of family recipes, they're some of my most treasured. I tend to branch out and try new things all year long but for holidays I invariably return to the traditional family dishes I've loved all my life :).

That curry looks delicious. It's been a while now since my Mom passed away so just this past year I took dozens of her recipes and published a cook book. There are so many favorites I have but the most fun is remembering all the cooking we did together over the years.

Mom always big pots of chili, soups and pasta sauce (and she always cooked pork chops and chicken in the sauce). Simple American comfort food. I've not tried brains or entrails yet, and am not sure if I will...ruby food at least looks good!

At first I thought this post would feature American dishes like mac and cheese and apple pie. I was pleasantly surprised, because this was way more interesting!

When we were kids and our family lived on the coast in Portugal, our dear father would take us out barnacle gathering. We would come home with one large and two smaller pails full and my mother would make a saute of onions and garlic and herbs and steam the barnacles in it. We would scrape off the meat and have a blast!

Great foodie post, thanks!

I am very choosy when it comes to food. I basically LOVE pasta and pizza.

Haha, there are so many disgusting food out there. Example, a lady who eats mud/sand? that was in Guinness World Book of Records. Some people eat cockroaches :S

Wonderful topic! I LOVE the weird side :D

Have a wonderful day!!

I really enjoy reading your blog, partly because they give me someone else's perspective as a Brit that has upped sticks and now calls somewhere else "home".

I have created a site which features the burblings of blogging Brits living abroad at http://transplanted.collected.info/

As part of this, I have included a link to your posts. I hope you don't mind.

If you'd prefer me to delete this link, please let me know, and I shall remove it straight away.

Thanks a lot!

Most anything my mother cooked was good. One of my favorites from her and my mother-in-law, was fried peach pies. I love them even today, but they are just not the same.

Most of my family recipes are pretty harmless, so I'm quite grateful for that! Although I hear that even high-end restaurants are re-discovering old-school foods like brains, heart, kidneys etc. I know a lot of people who think it's a delicatessen, but I'm really not into it...
