SCARY AIRPORTS ...

Dear readers, back again firing on all cylinders (apologies for brief interruption in service!) where ‘S’ is for *S*cary Airports …

Ever experienced a scary take-off or landing? Here are a few scary airports around the world ... and, err, apologies if you’re about to take a flight! Ooops!

1. Princess Juliana International Airport, St Maarten – above (so convenient for the beach - according to travel operators!)

2. Nepal – just look at that sloping runway! (below)
3.    St Barts, Caribbean (phew!)
4.    Courchevel, French Alps
5.    Funchal, Madeira (Whoops!)
6.    Barra airport, Outer Hebrides (watch those bumps!)
7.    Innsbruck, Austria
8.    Island of Saba, Caribbean
9.    Maui, Hawaii (not main airport, phew!)
ANY THOUGHTS? EXPERIENCED ANY SCARY AIRPORTS YOURSELF?
And, finally, thank you to all my dear readers who visited or commented.
Enjoy!
XOXO NORA & LOLA:)

I remember that just one week before I was to fly somewhere to visit my oldest son I'd watched one of those scary airplane disaster movies ( NOT a good idea, lol! :)

Oh yes - Castlegar, British Columbia and Cuzco, Peru - both like landing in the bottom of a tea cup.

Oh Nora, those are scary just to look at your pictures. I've seen a few of those, I am not sure where we landed at Maui. We flew from Honolulu to Maui in a small plane, it may have been yours.

Also the airport at Telluride, Colorado, is very small with a big drop off at the end of its short runway. Corporate jets use this too.

Yikes!! Nassau, Bahamas and Key West were a little scary! Glad I haven't flown into any of these airports!

That first one is a little TOO convenient to the beach! And a couple of the others -- well, I'd hate to go off a mountainside if the pilot didn't have it timed just right! Yikes!

love the photos that you found! I can't believe that plane over the beach is allowed to land so close to all those people. I'll have to remember that beach - and not stay there, ever! {:-Deb

Fortunately all airports I have used so far where safe ! I don't want to lay on a beach with airplanes flying over my head !

I know I'm a wuss, but San Diego always makes my heart go pitter patter a little.

It's worth it though to go to lovely San Diego!

Phew - none of these are on my list in May when I take my trip! We are regularly visiting San Diego - I always thought that was scary, flying so low and in the middle of the city!

We have family who vacation on St. Maarten and St. Barth's. I could probably land there if properly anesthetized. Doubt I could leave.

I love to fly but I remember when we went to Balize they stopped the plane on the runway while a "rich man" and his "daughter " got on. The stopped the plane by running out in front of the plane. I thought we were going to run them down. Guess this happens alot! Have a blessed Easter!

Phew! That is scary! Please don't take cutie lola on these flights :)

Have a blessed Easter!

I had been working in the Admissions Dept. in the University Hospital, Denver for 6 weeks when Flight 1713 went down in Denver. I still can close my eyes and smell the jet fuel all thru the hospital emergency room. I always hold someones hand when I fly over the moutains because the turbulance is so scary. Once flying back from Las Vegas I sat next to a young man who was as scared as I was. I prayed and we held hands until the turbulance stopped!
Fantastic photos.
Happy Easter and enjoy the weekend!

Hi Lola and Nora,

Yikes! there would be a bit of nail biting coming in to land, at some of these airports.
Wellington Airport is fairly nerve wracking, often if it is windy the plane bumps around and that is scary.

Happy Easter to you
hugs
Carolyn

The good news for me is that I've never been to any of those airports--whew indeed! But I will admit being on several flights where the flight crew got applause once we were on the ground, usually when we've encountered bad weather.

I guess that relaxing trip to paradise is fraught with danger when landing and taking off. A small price to pay for a trek to paradise...I have seen the St Maarten landing approach in pictures. I like aircraft - but would prefer to not to take that shot of its underside...is much bigger and heavier than I!

We fly often. My scariest is in Quito, Ecuador. Because it is right in the city and the mountains you can't take off or land many times because of the fog. Visiting from Mellow Yellow. Blessings, Debbie

That first photo is unbelievable! I can't believe that a plane must fly so low to a crowded beach area! Surely the beach must be unhealthy with all those petrol fumes! Fascinating post!

Condoriano said...

OMG, I don't want to be the passanger inside xD

Sheryl said...

I agree with Gemma - that first photo seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

I've landed at the Kathmandu airport, not on a highway, like the picture, but the city is in a bowl, surrounded by mountains, like Everest, so it takes quite experienced mountain pilots to navigate the landings.
